What to Expect.
The photo on the left is an example of an AC Moore classroom usually located in the back of the store with enough room for at least six to ten students.

I have a PDF of this document you can down-load by clicking the button below. It also includes the Q&A.

if you need to learn the concepts of oil painting explained in a simple straight forward way, you’ve come to the right place.

No one learns to paint well by reading a book. I’ve tried this in my youth with poor results. We start where you are, beginner or intermediate. Every artist was at one time an amateur. We are all climbing the stairs to the day our art will be fine enough to feel acceptable.

My classes and workshops are always friendly, fun and casual. All students get an “A” and you will not get a discouraging word from me, I believe all attempts to make art are worthy of praise. I give personal attention to each student several times during the class, resolving any problems or difficulties to insure a successful painting that you will be proud to take home.
The Process, wet on wet or Alla Prima, is a process very popular with plein air painter (out door artist) for quick completion while the light is available.

We will begin and finish a painting by the end of the day/class. Students start by coating the canvas with linseed oil. A simple grid is placed on the subject display painting. The student under my instruction will apply the same grid to his or her blank canvas using a painter’s edge.

The grid helps the student to draw areas where paint will be applied. At this point I take my first “walk-around or face-time” to help anyone who is stuck. I will touch the painting to make corrections unless the student objects. I’m not offended by this and totally understand.

The next step is what I call diffusion or taking back. We apply a towel to the surface of the painting applying gentle swipes. This eliminates excess paint and softens edges. I will explain during the class why this is important.

We begin from top to bottom refining shapes, color and values and applying surface strokes for a painterly look. During the class I take many walk-arounds sharing all my techniques and secrets, giving individual instruction to each student.

I will be looking for favorable traits and individual style and any problem we need to resolve. After several individual face times, our paintings are complete and ready for signing.

Q&A

How old does a student have to be to take your class?
14 to 17 with a guardian or parent. 18 to a 100+

How long will it take for my oil painting to dry?
Depending on humidity and thickness of the paint, it should take an average of a week to be dry to the touch.
Bring a box to transport your painting. If it's raining, hold the painting upside down as you leave the store.

I'm disabled and cannot stand, Is it possible to sit while I paint?
Yes, we have chairs in front of each easel.

I have never painted in my life, Is this a problem?
No. I do a thing I call" face time", where I rotate around the classroom looking to help someone if they get stuck. In the nine years of teaching, I have never had a student who did not walk out without being proud of their finished painting.

What happens if I'm delayed and I arrive an half-hour late?
Nothing, I will help you catch up while still talking and demonstrating to the class. Later than a half-hour, you can trans-fer to next month’s class.

Do I have to help clean up after the class?
No. I prefer to clean the brushes and classroom.

If I paid for the class and do not show up, is my tuition refundable?
Yes, as for me, a courtesy call is recommended, on the day or day after if possible, unless you transfer to the next class. In the eight years of teaching classes, I have never heard of AC Moore not returning your investment.

Why is the day class longer in hours than the night class?
We have a lunch break during the day class , the day class is much more casual. The night class is planned for students
to attend after work with more business and less socializing . We move a little faster to accomplish your painting.

I live far from the store, AC Moore wants me to travel to sign up and pay for the class in the store, is there another solution?
Yes, Call or email me that you are coming two days before the class event. I will reserve a place for you, pay the day of the class. AC Moore is aware that a commitment must be made to attend a class. I will call the day before the class, If there is less than three, policy is that the class is cancelled. I post to twitter and facebook, or you can call the store or my private phone.

If you do not find a question or answer here, please call me on my private Phone at 570-430-5045
